Northwest Shoals Community College, also known as NW-SCC, is a 2-year college located in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The school has two campuses, one in Phil Campbell, Alabama and the other in Muscle Shoals, also in Alabama. The school serves the counties of Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, and some parts of Winston. The school receives an average enrollment of over 5,000 students each term. The school colors are Navy Blue and Red and the school nickname are the Patriots.
NW-SCC was established in 1993 when Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals and Northwest Alabama Community College in Campbell merged. Northwest Alabama was established in 1963 and was the first junior college in the state of Alabama. Shoals Community College was established in 1966 as Joe Wheeler State Trade School. Then in 1973, the school decided to change its name to Muscle Shoals State Technical Institute after it achieved accreditation from the Commission on Occupational Educational Institutions.
The school offers Associate in Science, Associate in Arts, Associate in Applied Science, and Associate in Occupational Technology degrees. They also offer certificates in occupation and career training areas. The college’s associate degrees are offered so that students can use their credits to transfer to a 4-year college or university such as the UAB or the University of Alabama, in order to earn a 4-year bachelor’s degree. The school also offers certificate programs which can be completed in just one semester. They can certify completion of a certain occupational or technical training programs. Most of these programs do not require a high school degree. The school also offers 2-year General Education and Business Admin transfer degrees through Distance Learning. The school gets its accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
